The University of Sierra Leone is an accredited degree granting institution in The Republic of Sierra Leone. The university has a diverse and distinguished faculty dedicated to academic excellence and the development of the young minds who will become future leaders in many segments of the economy.
Statement by the Vice Chancellor and Principal
As a result of the Universities Act 2005, a new University of Sierra Leone was reconstituted comprising Fourah Bay College, founded in 1827, the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) founded in 1980 and the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS), founded in 1988. Hence Njala University College which used to be an arm of the former University of Sierra Leone now stands autonomous. It is now a University of its own and it is now renamed Njala University.
With an ever increasing demand for tertiary education, it was indeed necessary that this sort of arrangement was undertaken to give equal access to qualified applicants scattered all over the country.
The rearrangement of the University system also brought about a change in the administrative structure of both Universities. In the past a campus was headed by a Principal and this office was separated from that of the Vice Chancellor. However, with the current arrangement the offices of the Vice Chancellor and Principal are merged as one and it is now in the hands of the Chief Executive. The Heads of campuses are now referred to as Deputy Vice Chancellors/Deans of campuses.
Courses are now being reviewed and updated and where necessary obsolete courses are withdrawn from the curricular to give way to more recent courses that reflect present day needs of the local and international communities. The new University of Sierra Leone gives great importance to maintenance of standards and quality control so that our graduates can compete equally in the job market both locally and internationally.
The new University of Sierra Leone now operates a two semester system as opposed to the three terms system of the old University of Sierra Leone. With the exception of College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, we have now gone modular in keeping with modern trends of assessment in University education worldwide. It is a system new to us but gradually it is being grasped by lecturers and administrators alike.
The new University of Sierra Leone is a student-friendly institution. We consider our students as the very purpose of our being in the service of the university and therefore make it a priority to give them prompt and efficient services. The University is doing all within the limit of its resources to provide a conducive environment for our students, to make learning less stressful and a relaxed activity.
We have introduced computer courses for all students so that by the time they complete their courses they will be computer literate and well equipped to perform effectively in their places of work. Our focus is to give our students very high quality tuition and properly equip them for the world of work.
The administration is committed to advancing the mission and vision of the University of Sierra Leone and we assure all our students of a pleasant and memorable time during their stay in any of our campuses.
